Additives
Additives are in everything!!
Now that the blinkers are off as far as what food my family and I consume I've become shocked at just how many additives are foods that you wouldn't expect there to be.
I'm not becoming fanatical about all of this (some may disagree) but really it's bullshit that we as consumers aren't in control at all. Personally I started looking in to petro chemicals etc years ago but more exposure is needed to help raise peoples awareness.
Life is so busy these days and convenience plays a huge role in the choices we make.
Until recently I struggled to work out what to cook for tea and it became a tiresome affair with no help what so ever from my family members. I'd ask 'What do you want for tea?' and the responses I got went along the lines of; 'I dunno', 'What evers goin' and even 'Don't worry about me' (that is my hubby to a 'tea'). We even joked about creating frozen meals called 'What evers goin'.
Please don't think I'm passing judgement or pointing fingers when I say that we all need to start reading labels.
For example I wanted to make quiche and was going to buy puff pastry. Here is the ingredients for a well known brand: Wheat flour, water, margarine [vegetable oil, water, salt, emulsifiers (471, soy lecithin), food acid (330), antioxidant (306), colour (160a)], salt, food acids (300, 330).
Margarine is basically a chemical shift storm and in our house we use butter BUT even that has additives. I'm now looking at how to make my own butter (thermomix please) but pastry wise I decided to make my own short crust pastry.
It is basically flour, salt, butter and iced water.
To make it even easier I have a food processor with a folding blade that makes making dough super easy.
I didn't measure but I put plain flour in and chunks of butter, processed it up so it was like breadcrumbs and then slowly added iced water until i got the right consistency.
Voila!
If anyone is interested in additives, Sistermixin' on Facebook is a great start to get informed.
Here is an additive free webinar they have done:
